Accept Late Assignments

In a similar vein to the suggestion by Chris J on late submissions, one idea to late assignments is:
Rather than having assignments close after the due date and thus having students not be able to access them until the teacher manually extends due dates, one idea is to simply always keep assignments open, but if a student completes it after the due date, a zero is transferred into the gradebook. This way, a teacher can tell a student that he/she can always complete late work-- but it will only be accepted based on criteria set by the teacher (e.g. doctor's note, etc.). The advantage of this is that there is less work for the teacher because he/she doesn't have to manually change due dates and students don't have to wait for the teacher to do this in order to complete late work.

We've just rolled out the ability for instructors to accept late work!
Once a module item has been assigned to the class, you'll see a new toggle in the "Availability" section called "Allow Late Submission". With that setting turned on, students will be able to submit work after an assignment's due date (as long as they have not already submitted work for that assignment).
After the due date has been passed, the first time they submit their work that assignment will be marked as 'Closed', even if an assignment allows multiple attempts.
As an instructor, you'll be able to view the student's progress (even after due date) from the "Submissions" page. The "Score" column now represents the score a student would receive if there was no penalty for late submissions, while a new column ("Final Score") shows the actual score used for grading, after penalties have been applied. If a student submits late work, their "Final Score" for that assignment will be a zero.
Instructors can choose to extend the due date for individual students (to include their latest submission) if they'd like to accept their late work. Values in the "Final Score" column will be updated to reflect the grade changes.

Adding an option that allows students to complete the assignment after the due date (but without a score) makes a lot of sense.
